Neil Gorsuch, associate justice of the Supreme Court, said in a Fox News Sunday broadcast this week that there are too many federal laws in the United States.
Shannon Bream, host of the show, said: “I believe it will be eye-opening to the American public, the idea that our conduct in many cases is overregulated and criminalized.” You and others are likely committing felonies without even realizing it.
Gorsuch replied, “I believe that could be true. Professors claim that there are so many federal laws in place today, that every American older than 18 years commits a felony each day. This has happened during my lifetime. From 1970 to today, we have seen a possible double in the number of federal crimes. This is just the U.S. Code passed by Congress and the tip. Federal agencies have been very busy.”
He said, “On one hand, we need laws to protect us, but on the other, if there are too many laws, you will impair our freedoms, and also, our aspirations to equality, because you can deal the world is so much law?”
Gorsuch said, “As an 18-year judge, I saw him in case after case, trying to live his life, raise his family, and then getting whacked with laws unintentionally.”
