Prosecutors in Guerrero state said that 11 bodies were found by a highway in southern Mexico, in an area rife in drug cartel violence. Two of the bodies were minors.
Police received a tip late Wednesday night about an abandoned pickup truck in the city of Chilpancingo. This is the capital of the state. Two rival drug cartels are fighting for control in the 300,000-person city.
The prosecutor did not give the exact ages of two minors but stated that two out of 11 bodies were women. The highway on which they were discovered is the main route connecting Mexico City with the resort of Acapulco.
The city’s new mayor was beheaded and killed a week after taking office in early October. Alejandro Arcos was elected mayor of Chilpancingo on October 1. His beheaded body and head were found in a truck one week later.
Two rival drug gangs – the Tlacos & the Ardillos – are fighting to control the drug extortion and drug business in the city.
In 2023 the gang violence was so blatant in Chilpancingo that one gang staged an event with hundreds of people. They also hijacked the armored vehicle of the government, blocked the main highway, and held police as hostages to secure the release of suspects.
