It has been nearly two weeks since Vice President Kamala Harris was chosen as head of “leading efforts” against the crisis at the border, but she has still not visited the Border or called a press conference to talk about a plan of action. She is supposed to be working with nations to enhance migration enforcement at the borders but has only held a phone call with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei and Mexico’s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to discuss the “root causes” of the crisis. VP Harris has pledged to visit the Border “at some point,” but she won’t elaborate on any dates. How does one tackle a “border crisis” without visiting the Border?
While migrant children are being left to fend for themselves in overcrowded migrant facilities and criminals are let loose at the Border by Patrol agents, VP Harris took the time to visit Chicago’s Brown Sugar Bakery this week and have her staff preorder her a slice of German chocolate cake. She faced heavy scrutiny for taking a trip to Chicago to tour a vaccination site that opened up to union workers, instead of taking a trip down to the Border. She even flew to California near the end of the week and was just a few hours driving distance from the Border, but did not visit.
New York Post reporter Steven Nelson asked White House press secretary Jen Psaki if VP Harris was quietly backing off of the border crisis problem since Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas started pursuing ‘Trump-era policies.’ This reference was to the Biden administration’s announcement that they would be funding a “limited” border wall construction to fill in some of the ‘gaps.’ Psaki wasn’t too happy with that question and snapped back in defense over VP Harris’s bakery trip.
“And so, while she was there, like many Americans, she got a snack. I think she’s allowed to do that. But she was there to talk about COVID and play a role as she’s playing a significant role in our efforts to address vaccine hesitancy, communicate with the public about how we can do this and it’s imperative to get the vaccine when it’s available,” Psaki said.
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley criticized the White House’s response to VP Harris’s handling of the border crisis. She talked about Trump’s response to the Border and how he used “tough love” on controlling the situation with other countries and making it clear that those who wish to come to the U.S would have to apply for asylum from there.
“It’s really unacceptable that Biden is so obsessed with Trump reversals that he’ll literally put the American public and these kids, at risk the way he is. And then he gives Kamala Harris – apparently, she’s the one in charge. This is the same person who encouraged 7,000 migrants to come to America. She referred to ICE as the KKK. She’s now in charge of this,” Haley said.
President Joe Biden used his entire campaign to talk about the dismantling of Trump’s wall and the support for amnesty. This is the crisis they expected, and as the administration comes under increasing pressure due to the surge at the border, they seem to be suggesting a lot of Trump-era policies to handle the problem. President Biden even seemed to suggest a return to Trump’s very own “Remain In Mexico” policy on March 22. Who would’ve figured?
