NYC Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Resigns—Latest High-Profile Exit in Adams Administration

Phil Banks III resigned as New York City’s Deputy Mayor for Public Safety on Monday, the latest to be affected by the corruption scandal that has engulfed the administration of Eric Adams.

Adams told NY1. “We talked yesterday and again this morning, and he said he wanted to move on with his life.” “I wish my friend well.”

David Banks, Banks’s brother, has resigned from his position as chancellor of schools. Sheena Wright is the first deputy mayor, David Banks’ wife. She will be leaving the administration.

Phil Banks’ phone was seized by the federal government last month, as part of an investigation on how police enforced city nightlife regulations. David Banks, Sheena Wright, and others also had their phones confiscated.

Phil Banks, who was at one time the most senior uniformed officer of the NYPD, quit the department in 2014, amid a corruption scandal that occurred during the previous administration. Federal prosecutors named Banks as an unindicted conspirator at the time.

Adams has denied a five-count charge of bribery, fraud and corruption. He has refused to resign despite calls from his critics.

Adams, NY1, said that New Yorkers want to see you continue the work you have been doing.
