Republican lawmakers claim that President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security is creating plans to send migrants into American towns, hours beyond the U.S.–Mexico border.
According to the New York Post, the potential policy is one way DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorkas seeks to reduce the flow of migrants to U.S. border communities. August Pfluger (Republican from Texas) wrote to Mayorkas to express concern over the government sending migrants to San Angelo in Texas, which he represents.
Pfluger wrote that San Angelo was a welcoming community. However, the locality had not signed up for this mission and they are not responsible for the burdens of border crisis.
He said that the DHS’s shortsighted policies to encourage illegal immigration and its failure to control the southern border operationally led to this situation.
Pfluger said that he learned about the DHS plans only after San Angelo’s local law enforcement informed him.
This potential bus campaign is months after Republican Texas Governor. Greg Abbott protested against the Biden administration’s immigrant policies by sending buses of migrants to Washington, D.C.
Abbott stated that Texasans deserve and demand a comprehensive, aggressive strategy to secure their border. He also criticized President Biden’s inept leadership. “As the federal government continues its rollback of commonsense policies which once kept our communities safe,” Abbott said in a statement at the time. He added that local law enforcement had stepped up to protect Texans against dangerous criminals, deadly drug use, and illegal contraband flooding into Texas.
Abbott has already sent more than 2,000 migrants by bus to Washington, D.C.
