Tragedy in New Jersey: Train Crash Kills Operator, Injures Dozens After Striking Tree

New Jersey Transit commuter trains struck a piece of a fallen tree on Monday. The train driver died and more than two dozen other people were injured.

NJ Transit released a press release stating that the accident happened shortly after 6 am, just north of Roebling Station. The River Line train carried 42 passengers, and a television news clip showed a large tree branch under the front of the train.

NJ Transit reported that 23 people received minor treatment for injuries. The authorities investigated how the tree got onto the tracks.

As authorities investigated, the River Line suspended service in both directions from Roebling to Trenton. Sections of nearby roads including U.S. Highway 130 were also closed.
