Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is calling for the repeal of the Espionage Act following raids by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the Florida estate of former President Trump, Mar-a-Lago. Paul announced the news via Twitter on Saturday night.
“The espionage law was misused from the beginning to prison dissenters in WWI. Paul tweeted, “It is past time to repeal that egregious offense to the 1st Amendment.”
On Monday, FBI agents executed a search warrant at Trump’s Florida estate and seized 11 sets of material. Some were classified as well as others that were top secret.
Trump stated in a Truth Social post that documents taken by federal agents had been “all declassified” after Friday’s warrant was made public.
“Number 1: It was all declassified. Number two, they didn’t have to’seize anything. They could have it whenever they wanted, without having to play politics or break into Mar-a Lago. It was stored in secure storage with an additional lock added to their request Trump stated. Trump stated, “They could have it whenever they wanted–and that includes LONG AGO.” ALL THEY HAD to do was ask. What are they going do with 33 million pages of documents that President Obama brought to Chicago?
In a press release, the National Archives and Records Administration stated that ex-President Obama doesn’t have control over records from his presidential administration.
