RFK Jr. Campaign Hints at Possible Exit, But Leaves Future Plans Unclear

According to Nicole Shanahan, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent presidential candidate, is considering backing Donald Trump as the former president.

Shanahan spoke about the Kennedy campaign’s options during an appearance on “Impact Theory”, a podcast.

Shanahan said:

We have two options. One is to stay in and form that new party. But we risk a Kamala-Harris and Walsh presidency because we will draw more votes from Trump.

She acknowledged that “it is not an easy decision.”

Shanahan said that Kennedy was considering staying in the race to gain more than five percent of the popular vote. This would make him a third-party alternative to both the Republicans and Democrats. He could then use this momentum to run for office in 2028.

Shanahan said, “We’re considering two options. One is to stay in and form that new party. But we risk a Kamala-Harris and Walz presidential election because we attract votes from Trump or draw more votes from Trump.”

Shanahan’s remarks come in the wake of news that Kennedy’s campaign faces financial problems.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s floundering presidential campaign is in dire financial straits. It spent more money than it raised during July.

According to a Monday report filed by the Federal Election Commission, the independent had just $3.9 in his bank account last month. He owed nearly $3.5 in debt. The campaign spent more than $ 7 million in July despite reducing events and raising only $ 5.6 million, almost half of it from Nicole Shanahan, his running mate.

Kennedy’s campaign is facing several challenges. He still attempts to get on ballots in important states but was denied access recently in New York after a judge determined that the residential address listed on his petitions wasn’t his real home address.

Kennedy hasn’t appeared in a public event for a campaign since early July. He appears sparingly at conferences and podcasts. His poll numbers have continued to fall, as both major parties are consolidating their support following the Republican National Convention. Vice President Kamala Harris has replaced President Joe Biden on the top of the ticket.

Kennedy had been considering endorsing Trump or Harris for a role in their administration, according to recent reports.

Kennedy reportedly asked for positions in the administrations of former President Donald Trump and Harris in recent weeks in exchange for dropping out. He was rebuffed.

Kennedy dismissed the Harris whispers on Thursday by writing: (emphasis is added)

VP Harris’s Democratic Party is unrecognizable to my father and my uncle, and it contradicts my values.

The Democratic Party of RFK & JFK was a party of civil rights and freedom of speech. The party of VP Harris is one of censorship, lockdowns, and medical coercion.

Kennedy Democrats were against the war. Kamala’s party is rife with neocon warmongers.

The RFK/JFK Dems were the allies of Main Street and workers, police, firefighters, etc. VP Harris is the Party of Big Tech and Big Pharma.

My father and uncle’s political party championed voting rights and fair elections. VP Harris is the party that promotes lawfare, disenfranchisement, and the coronation of its candidates by party elites and corporate donors.

I have used the courts of our country to bring criminal charges against corporations that harm Black Americans. VP Harris exploited Black Americans’ labor and used our nation’s courts to punish them mercilessly.

My father and my uncle were proud of their debate skills and ability to articulate a coherent vision for the country. VP Harris can’t handle an unscripted conversation and is afraid to debate. She uses middle school tactics to outline her vision – memes and fabricated headlines. She also uses name-calling (“Republicans are weird”) and fabricated headlines to get her message across.

I’ve spent many years fighting government corruption and lies. VP Harris has spent years libeling Americans on the health of the Commander-in-Chief.

I do not plan to endorse Kamala for president. I have a plan for defeating her.

If RFK Jr. drops out, will this benefit former president Donald Trump or vice-versa?

It’s difficult to say. A June Economist/YouGov survey showed that 44 percent of RFK Jr. supporters voted in favor of President Joe Biden for 2020. Around 37 percent voted for Trump. This might indicate that the Democratic candidate has an advantage.

The fact that Vice President Harris is the Democratic Party nominee for president could complicate things further. Harris may not be as appealing as Biden to disaffected Biden supporters. It could lead more of these voters toward Trump or to stay home on Election Day.

If the Economist/YouGov survey is accurate, it’s also worth noting the previous Trump/Biden supporters numbers aren’t too far apart. It’s also possible that this won’t have a big impact on the outcome. They would almost cancel out each other. Harris’s new candidacy combined with Kennedy’s endorsement of Trump could make a significant difference for the former President. At this stage, it may be better for Kennedy to remain in the race.
