Right-wing opposition to Rep. Kevin McCarthy as House Majority leader was palpable at the start of 2023. Rep. Chip Roy, along with other conservatives, held up McCarthy’s promotion during a long-drawn-out fight to get a new rule package and assurances surrounding investigations.
McCarthy eventually won the vote after several concessions. At that point, it seemed fair to clean the slate. He was given a chance and, for the most, has been a good leader. McCarthy has also kept his word regarding the investigations into the weaponization and corruption of the Biden Family.
It was only a matter of time before he disappointed me. McCarthy, according to a recent report, has put up a major roadblock in the way of impeaching Joe Biden. McCarthy wants a vote to be held before an impeachment investigation is even begun.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told Breitbart News that if House Republicans pursue an impeachment investigation into Democrat president Joe Biden, it would not be announced by him or anyone else but rather a formal vote in the House.
“To open an investigation into impeachment is a serious issue, and House Republicans wouldn’t take it lightly or abuse it for political reasons,” McCarthy told Breitbart News that the American people deserved to be heard in this matter by their elected representatives. McCarthy said that if an impeachment investigation were to proceed, it would be through a vote in the People’s House, not a declaration from one person.
McCarthy is sabotaging impeachment and ensuring that it won’t happen. Nancy Pelosi, the then-Speaker of the House, announced from the floor the 2019 impeachment investigation into Donald Trump.
It is the purpose of the investigation to collect enough information so that members can vote in a way they are informed. The only way to ensure that all Democrats will vote against the inquiry is to have them vote. Republicans, on the other hand, would need votes from almost all their members. It will be difficult given the large number of moderate Republicans in the Republican caucus. How many want to vote to start an impeachment investigation into Biden on record?
McCarthy leaves the moderates hanging. Either they fail the investigation because they voted no and get slammed by the right, or they succeed the inquiry because they voted yes and get slammed by the left. Why? Why not start the investigation based on the words of the Speaker? This would protect the caucus while allowing the investigators to do what they are supposed to be doing.
McCarthy may not have intended for a vote to take place. If he does not have enough votes, he will definitely not hold a vote. This is the first big blemish in his career. I don’t get the strategy. He said he would conduct an investigation, but now the outcome is completely uncertain.
Also, I could be cynical and he has the votes. We’ll see.
