Hunter Biden is launching an aggressive counterattack against his accusers. He has asked the Department of Justice for a criminal investigation into Trump associates who he claims illegally accessed a computer he left behind and left at a Delaware repair facility.
Biden’s lawyers also sued Tucker Carlson, Fox News host for making “false claims” that Biden’s son had access classified documents kept at his father’s house.
This new White House strategy is represented by Hunter Biden’s salvo. It will be used during all investigations into the president, his son and Democrats, as Republicans intensify a long list investigations now that they hold control of the House.
Although Hunter Biden is currently being investigated by the Justice Department for tax evasion, Hunter Biden’s request for a criminal investigation does not necessarily mean that federal prosecutors will open an investigation or take other actions. It is a significant shift in strategy, and a rare public response from the younger Biden with his legal team to years-long attacks by Republican officials. This scrutiny will continue now that Republicans have taken control of the House.
It is also the latest salvo of the long-running laptop scandal. The story began in October 2020 with a New York Post article detailing some emails that were discovered on the device. These emails are related to Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings. Trump quickly seized it as a campaign issue in the 2016 presidential election.
It is absurd to claim that Trump’s aides illegally accessed his personal data on the laptop. Biden dropped three laptops off at John Paul Mac Isaac’s computer repair shop in April 2019. After several failed attempts by Mac Isaac, Hunter Biden to contact him, Biden dropped off three laptops in April 2019. The hard drive of the computer was eventually returned to Rudy Giuliani’s lawyer Brian Costello.
Hunter Biden had already forfeited his right to privacy regarding the laptop. This is a political suit that Hunter Biden wants to divert attention from the contents of his laptop.
Matthew Olsen, the top national security official at the Justice Department, received the letter. The letter cites possible violations to statutes that prohibit unauthorized access to a computer or stored electronically communication. It also mentions the possibility of theft across state borders and publication of restricted personal information with the intent of intimidating or threatening.
Tucker Carlson’s suit is also funny. Carlson’s speech is protected under the First Amendment. Carlson hasn’t stated definitively that the younger Biden accessed classified information. He only mentioned that Hunter Biden was at the same place where classified documents were kept.
The suit against Carlson and the DOJ letter requesting a criminal investigation are unlikely to be sustained. The Justice Department should not respond to the political plot with a response. It’s probable that a judge will dismiss the suit against Tucker Carlson.
Biden’s lawyers have begun to plan for a trial. It is not a bad idea to tell the truth to anyone who might be on a Hunter Biden jury.
