Washington DC Mayor Muriel bowser has asked the National Guard to mobilize to help with migrants being brought to DC from the southern states.
Mayor, who championed the acceptance of migrants entering the country illegally, asked that the DC National Guard be activated indefinitely in order to help with the “humanitarian crisis.”
Bowser wants the DC Armory to be used as a processing centre and DC National Guard resources used to assist field migrants arriving by bus.
As a political statement about President Biden’s handling at the southern border immigration crisis, GOP governors Greg Abbott in Texas and Doug Ducey in Arizona sent busloads of migrants to Washington.
Bowser has voiced her dismay at the city’s migrant boom, suggesting that people are being “tricked into” coming to D.C. However, she stressed that it is a federal issue and requires a federal response.
Isaias Guerrero, a volunteer from Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, told DCist that he didn’t see anyone from Mayor Bowser’s office. He continued, “We don’t see anyone from the Office of Latino Affairs to say ‘Welcome. How can we support you?’ even though it’s with similar waters.” People want to clean their hands, because it’s a hot potato. It should be seen as an opportunity to create a welcoming model.

The ongoing problem of homelessness in the capital is exacerbated by the steady increase in illegal immigration.
Bowser spoke on Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation to discuss the city’s persistent homelessness problem.
Margaret Brennan, host, brought up a Washington Post report claiming that homeless shelters are being filled by illegal immigrants who have been bused into Arizona and Texas.
Bowser acknowledged that it was a “significant problem” and asked for more federal involvement as she fears illegal immigrants will be “tricked” into coming to her city.
