Covert Collaboration: Cuba Allegedly Houses Secret Chinese Spy Base to Monitor U.S.

Officials in the United States with access to highly-classified intelligence have reported that China and Cuba are reportedly close to a secret agreement. China intends to set up a secret electronic surveillance center in Cuba under this agreement. This will pose a new geopolitical threat to the United States.

This facility is located approximately 100 miles off of Florida’s coast and would give Chinese intelligence agencies the ability to intercept electronic communications in the southeast region of the United States which contains numerous military installations as well as monitor U.S. marine traffic.

According to sources familiar with the matter, China has agreed to give Cuba financial assistance in the amount of several billion dollars as a form of compensation for the permission to build the facility. The exact terms of the deal have not yet been finalized but the two countries are said to have reached an agreement on principle.

The Wall Street Journal reported that “the revelation of the planned site has caused alarm in the Biden Administration because Cuba is so close to the U.S. continent.” Washington views Beijing as the most important economic and military competitor. “A Chinese base in the U.S. backyard with advanced intelligence and military capabilities could be a new, unprecedented threat.”

We are not comforted by the Biden Administration’s answer.

John Kirby, the National Security Council’s spokesman, said: “While I can’t speak directly to this report, I am well aware of the People’s Republic of China’s attempts to invest in infrastructure in the world, which may have military applications, including here in the hemisphere. We have discussed this many times.” “We are monitoring it closely and taking steps to counteract it. We remain confident that we can meet our security obligations at home, around the globe, and in the region.”

Does anyone expect that the Biden administration will take “steps” to counter this move by China in any meaningful way? It is worth remembering that this administration was more concerned with not offending China during the spy-balloon scandal in February than it was about our national security. Three Biden administration officials who were not identified revealed that a Chinese spy balloon had been allowed to fly above the United States for a full week, and it was able to send secret intelligence back to Beijing in “real-time” regarding several military bases.

Joe Biden’s close relationship with China has been a source of concern for many years. China is yet to be held accountable for its role in this crisis, despite the fact that it has been three years since COVID-19 first emerged. It has not been held accountable for the spy balloon incident either, and this lack of consequences may have encouraged it to make such a rash decision to establish a surveillance station just a few miles from the U.S. mainland. The Biden administration cares more about improving its relations with China than it does the national security of the United States.
