Autistic Boy, 9, Found Dead After Going Missing at Brooklyn Ikea

Authorities in New York said that the body of the 9-year-old boy who was reported missing from Red Hook, Brooklyn on Wednesday night was recovered early Thursday morning.

The family reported the boy missing around 9 pm local time, after he left an Ikea store, where they were shopping. Police divers found the boy and took him to New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital where he died, according to New York Daily News.

Ikea is located at Beard Street next to the Erie Basin.

According to the report the boy, whose identity is not yet released, was wearing a blue shirt, orange Crocs, and a thick stripe of white just above the sole when he disappeared. NYPD found the shoes outside the store and dive teams searched the water nearby.

The police said the child probably wandered away from the store on his own, but they did not know how he got into the water.

The NYPD K9 Unit and FDNY EMS crews responded to the scene in order to help with the search. Helicopters, boats, and EMS crews were all deployed to assist in the search for the boy.
